My internet has been out for a week or so and it’s been horrible without it! I finished the Motionless Knight contest but don’t feel it’s worthy of the eyes of the internet. And the following week we skipped as we thought everyone wasn’t too keen on the contest.
But we’re back now! This weeks theme is Silly Pirate. This character isn’t remotely related to that. Unless he’s so silly, he forgot he was a pirate and thinks he’s a miner instead.
This is just a little practice/warm up character design before I start on my silly pirate. I have an idea for a young child who’s fantasizing about being a pirate so they have made a costume out of bits they’ve found around the house. But we’ll see, as I have even sillier ideas.
The texture credit for The Miner is as follows:
Wool Texture Denim Texture Wood Texture Leather Texture Metal Texture Bandage Texture Glasses Texture Fire Texture Mud Texture Stubble Texture
The wonderful Ali Malik has proposed that some of the artists in our class should set ourselves a weekly challenge of creating a character/environment a week to keep ourselves limber for 3rd year. So myself, Ali, Ryan Bradley and Thomas Turner got straight to work.
This weeks theme is “Motionless Knight”. Here’s a concept and colour pass for an idea I’ve had. The idea of being motionless stumped me at first, as all I could think of was a knight in a wheelchair and full body cast. But that’s no fun. Then I remembered The Witcher 2 trailer (2:18) where all the crewmen are frozen and it inspired me to create a knight who’d been frozen. Going off on a tangent, I thought about The Snow Queen, if anyone remembers the cartoon. So I want to create a female knight/ice queen who has been frozen for thousands of years.
The reference for the helm came from this badass sketch by Randy Toroni.
The models have to be completed by Sunday at midnight. If we fail to deliver we have to buy the other contest members a pizza toastie from Subway. There is no room for failure!
If anyone wants to join in our weekly challenges then send me a message and I’ll invite you to our thread on Facebook.
An update on my evil doctor (who’s now turned kind of sci-fi with a touch of military) character design. Still undecided on my colour pallet. Grey’s good.
I don’t know what I was thinking making an old man head, so I got over that hurdle by sticking a mask on it. Aww yeah.
Also, when I first modelled this guy he looked horrid all skinny, so I gave him a heavy upper body. Still counts, right?
Either way, here’s some very wippy wips.
Lab Coat Concepts
I think I’m gearing towards to malnourished scientist/inventor for the Character Art module. Here are some lab coat designs. We also have to design a small environment for the character. So I’m thinking ‘The Gentleman’ so I can go for a really rich, mahogany study with some steampunk-esque inventions lying around.
Mage WIP Mark II
Another progress shot of the mage I’m working on. Not sure if to amour her up a bit and turn her into a battlemage or make her a bit more earthly and change her to a forest nymph.
We started our Character Art module this week and we were all given different themes. I was given the brief ‘very little nourishment’. I’ve got a tonne of different ideas for this, here are just some. (Various reference used so the character design will dramatically change, these are more ideas as opposed to design.)
1) The Inventor
An inventor who’s spent all of his life creating the antidote for death. His days are numbered now and he’s getting ever closer to the solution. He’s stopped eating and sleeping to spend more time on his studies.
2) The Biomechanical Man
In a postapocolyptic world food is in short supply. This chappy has found that because of his lack of nutrition he has had to replace some of his limbs with mechanical parts.
3) The Flaming Skeleton
This is actually quite personal to me. I used to have this horrific vision when I was younger of a flaming skeleton with a Native American headdress on chasing me up the stairs. I used to run up them stairs so fast!
4) The Host
This giant robot is controlled by a tiny malnourished alien. The alien came to Earth only to find that it couldn’t be sustained by any of our resources. Maybe his spaceship transforms into a robot and he uses that to get around as it’s less energy, idk?
5) The Samurai
Though not all that original it’d be awesome to design a tonne of armour. This samurai warrior has been abandoned in the dessert and is relentlessly trying to find his way back. Maybe some custom gear to protect his eyes from sandstorm and some footwear to help him traverse the dunes? Doesn’t even have to be a samurai now.
6) The Top Dog
This guy is actually at the very top of the food chain. Unfortunately, because of where he lives food doesn’t often come into his areas. He is a rapidly declining breed.
A Mage Robe
A wip for a robe design that came into my mind when I woke up this morning. I will slowly try and get this finished. I’ve started back at uni now and THERE IS SO MUCH TO BE DONE!
On a side note, I’ve changed my url (formally lucybakescakes). I’m a Futurama buff. ;)
